Chandler Bing Syndrome

In awkward situations where most people freeze up, I do the complete opposite. I essentially act like I’ve had a few too many, which may or may not actually be the case.

I can’t remember where, but I once heard someone refer to themselves as a ‘Chandler.’ As in, funny, delightfully quirky Chandler Bing from one of the best shows to be on television EVER, Friends. I thought about it for a second and decided that the description also applied to me.

If I’m feeling the mood is tense or uncomfortable, I will, without a doubt, make a joke. It often is at least somewhat inappropriate for the situation. Other times, no one gets it and the situation is made even more uncomfortable when my joke falls flat.

I’m also somewhat notorious for telling secrets when I don’t know what to say. I have told Eric’s friends things I hadn’t told Eric yet because I wasn’t sure how to keep the conversation rolling. Naturally, divulging a secret I had been hiding is the first thought that comes to mind. Then, I’m forced to actually tell Eric, who’s usually understanding but has, once or twice, been not so charmed by my misadventures.

I mean, really, though, being a Chandler is not the worst thing in the world. I make people genuinely laugh most of the time, when I’m not making the situation very awkward. Although I’ve always wanted to be a Rachel…

Are you a Chandler too? How do you react to awkward situations?
